Etymology

An evident Pre-Greek word in -ηξ like πήληξ (pḗlēx), τράφηξ (tráphēx), ὄρπηξ (órpēx) and νάρθηξ (nárthēx). It might have been folk-etymologically adapted to φῆλος (phêlos, deceitful).
