χηλή

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • χᾱλᾱ́ (khālā́)Doric

Etymology

Of unclear origin. Traditionally connected with χηρᾰμός (khērămós, hole, hollow), χήμη (khḗmē, yawning, gaping), and χάσκω (kháskō, I yawn, gape), but the supposed unifying connections are obscure.[1] Compare also χελώνη (khelṓnē, turtle), also of unclear origin, which could be related through Pre-Greek if it originally referred to the hard shell.
