Горват

Pannonian Rusyn

Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *xъrvatъ. The unusual initial consonant (the expected form is Хорват (Xorvat), cf. Czech and Slovak Chorvát, Russian and Ukrainian хорва́т (xorvát)) is only shared with Carpathian Rusyn Горва́т (Horvát), which may suggest a borrowing from Hungarian horvát. However, Hungarian h- is often borrowed as х- (x-); see харча (xarča), from Hungarian harcsa.
