Etymology
Inherited from Old East Slavic Дънѣпръ (Dŭněprŭ), from Proto-Slavic *Dъněprъ, from Old Ossetic *dānu apara (“the far river”) or *dānapr (“the deep river”), the first element being from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰánwati << *dʰénh₂- ~ dʰn̥h₂-u- << Proto-Indo-European *dʰenh₂- (“to flow”).
Compare with Днестр (Dnestr), whose name probably means "the close river."
