Etymology

Үдэ (Üde) is the native Buryat name for River Uda (right tributary of Selenga), while Улаан (Ulaan, red) denoted Soviet ideology. Replaced the city’s former name Верхнеудинск (Vjerxnjeudinsk, literally city on Upper Uda) in 27 July 1934.
