Янтра
Bulgarian
Etymology
Attested Ancient Greek Ἄθρυς (Áthrus), later also Latin Iatrus, Ieterus.
Ultimately from Thracian. Related to Latvian ātrs (“quick, rapid, fast”) and Old High German ātar (“sharp; quick, fast”).
Duridanov separates the attested forms in two categories:
- Етър < Ieterus which reflect the original Thracian word
- Янтра < Ἄθρυς, Iatrus which must reflect the term being borrowed early into Dacian
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈja̟ntrɐ]
Proper noun
