From Proto-Turkic *bilegü (“hone”).[1] Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (bile-, “to sharpen”), Southern Altai билеер (bileer, “to whet”), билӱ (bilü), Kumyk билев (bilew), Azerbaijani bülöv, Turkish bileği, and Turkmen bilew.
