From Proto-Mordvinic *veśə, inherited from Proto-Uralic *we(ń)ćɜ (“every, all, whole”). Cognate with Udmurt воч (voć), Komi-Zyrian вач (vać), possibly cognate with Hungarian össze (“together”). The Uralic word may in turn be borrowed from Indo-Iranian; compare Proto-Iranian *wícwah (“all, every; whole”).

Alternative theories suggest a borrowing from Proto-Slavic *vьśь or a derivation from Proto-Mordvinic *vej (“one”) +‎ *śe (“this”); compare Moksha сембе (sembe, “all”) (from *śe +‎ *-mbə).
