Etymology 2

Per BER, a recent derivative, probably from contamination of ве́зя (vézja, to web, to braid) and въже́ (vǎžé, rope). Formally equivalent to Proto-Slavic *ǫzъ (bond, tie) (whence Old Church Slavonic съвѫзъ (sŭvǫzŭ, link, conjoinment)), *ǫza (chain) (whence Old Church Slavonic ѫза (ǫza, shackles, fetters)).
