Etymology

From a defective verb е- (e-) +‎ -ме (-me) +‎ -с (-s), the root is from Proto-Turkic *er- (“to be”). Cognate with Kyrgyz эмес (emes), Southern Altai эмес (emes), Uzbek emas, Shor эбес, Uyghur ئەمەس (emes).
