From Proto-Mordvinic *kaj-mə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic *kajwa- (“to dig, scoop”). Cognates include Finnish kaivaa (“to dig (up)”), Northern Sami goaivut, Eastern Mari куаш (kuaš), Udmurt куяны (kujany), Tundra Nenets сива (syiwa, “shovel”).
