From Proto-Mordvinic *kaj-mə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic *kajwa- (to dig, scoop). Cognates include Finnish kaivaa (to dig (up)), Northern Sami goaivut, Eastern Mari куаш (kuaš), Udmurt куяны (kujany), Tundra Nenets сива (syiwa, shovel).
