Usually associated with Ancient Greek Ἀθηναῖος (Athēnaîos, “Athenian”); compare the nickname of ancient Bishop of Athens Hierotheos the Thesmothete – Ерофе́й-офе́ня. Less likely from Greek αφέντης (aféntis, “master, prince”) or ὀθόνιον (othónion), ὀθόνη (othónē) ("fine linen"). Also associated with Polish ochweśnicki (“related to an ochweśnik (a 19th-century dealer in devotional items from Skulsk)”).
