Etymology

Uncertain. Several suggestions have been given, among them:

  • from помагам (pomagam) +‎ -ач (-ač)
  • from помака (pomaka) +‎ -ен (-en) – literally “one who has been tortured”, itself from мъка (mǎka)
  • from поляк (poljak) – referring to Pauline Polish people who, after converting to Islam, were relocated to the Balkans
