Inherited from Old Ruthenian пращуръ (praščur), from Old East Slavic пращуръ (praščurŭ), from Proto-Slavic *praščurъ. By surface analysis, пра- (pra-) +‎ шчур (ščur). Cognate with Russian пра́щур (práščur) and Ukrainian пра́щур (práščur).
