Inherited from Proto-Slavic *orkyta, which Pokorny connects to Ancient Greek ἄρκευθος (árkeuthos, “juniper”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂erkʷ- (“bend”).[1] Also compare Latvian ērkšķis (“thorn bush”).
