ро̄ссь

Kildin Sami

Etymology

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) Not clear, directly or via other Sami language (compare Ter Sami россе (rossʼe)), but ultimately from Proto-Samic *rossē.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈroːsʲː/

Noun

ро̄ссь (rōss’)

  1. (rare) horse
    Synonym: е̄бешь (jiebješ’)

Usage notes

  • The word appears in Antonova’s and Kert’s dictionaries, though it can’t be found in Itkonen’s nor in Afanasjeva’s sources.
  • It also appears to be quite rare, and in most cases for the word "horse" you expect to see е̄бешь.
