- Inherited from Proto-Slavic *rujьnъ (“turbulent”); akin to Bulgarian ри́я (ríja, “to dig”).
- Inherited from Proto-Slavic *rujьnъ (“reddish, vibrant”), limited to South Slavic; akin to dialectal Bulgarian руй (ruj, “sumac”).
