Etymology

Borrowed from Polish sympatia, from Latin sympathīa, from Ancient Greek συμπάθεια (sumpátheia).^[1] Compare Russian симпа́тия (simpátija), Belarusian сімпа́тыя (simpátyja).

Usage notes

Although симпа́тія (sympátija) is cognate with sympathy, these words may have different connotations. The Ukrainian симпа́тія implies attraction, liking or warm feeling, but usually not compassion or condolence (these senses are conveyed by співчуття́ n (spivčuttjá)).
