Unclear. There are two theories:

• from an East Slavic form meaning “body” and probably ending in /b/ (as in Ukrainian ту́луб (túlub, “torso”)), thus cognate with ту́ловище (túlovišče), Old East Slavic ту́лово (túlovo);
• a Turkic borrowing, cf. Kazakh тұлып (tūlyp, “lambskin bag; stuffed animal skin”), Southern Altai тулуп (tulup, “sack”), Chagatai [script needed] (tulb, “leather bag”).
