эрзя

Erzya

Alternative forms

  • ӓрзя (ärźa)

Etymology

Unknown. There are at least two hypotheses regarding the origin of the word:

  • The word derived from Proto-Mordvinic *eŕams (to live); compare Erzya эряза (eŕaza), Moksha (j)äŕaza (lively).[1] However, *eŕams itself may be related to *irkä ~ *ürkä.

In the both cases -зя (-źa) may be a noun-forming suffix (from Proto-Mordvinic *-za).

Noun

эрзя • (erźa)

  1. Erzya (a member of the ethnic group Erzya-Mordvin, closely related to the Moksha or Moksha-Mordvin).
  2. Erzya language (a Finno-Ugrian language).
