ґомбовец
Pannonian Rusyn
Alternative forms
- ґомбовца f (gombovca)
Etymology
Possibly from earlier *ґомбовц (*gombovc), borrowed from Hungarian gombóc, normalized with -овец (-ovec). Alternatively, a back-formation from the plural form ґомбовци (gombovci) or other oblique forms, from *ґомбовц (*gombovc), re-interpreted as the plural form of a noun ending in -ец (-ec). Cognate with Carpathian Rusyn ґомбо́вц (gombóvc), ґомбо́вець (gombóvecʹ), Slovak gombovec, gombovc and Ukrainian ґомбовець (gombovecʹ), ґомбовці (gombovci), and also Serbo-Croatian гомбоц / gomboc, the latter directly borrowed from Hungarian.
