From *qatïq "soured milk product"; earlier meaning "something added to soup or eaten with bread; dish seasoning, dressing, condiment". A suffix-derived noun from the well-attested verbal stem *qat- "to add; season a dish". Analyzable as қату (qatu) +‎ -ық (-yq).
