Etymology

Inherited from Old Armenian *ճոպուր (*čopur), a Zan borrowing: compare Mingrelian ჭუბური (č̣uburi), Laz ჭუბური (ç̌uburi), ჭუბრი (ç̌ubri), Georgian წაბლი (c̣abli, chestnut). The -ղ- (-ġ-) is epenthetic. See also Old Armenian ճողոպրիմ (čołoprim).
