նեգր • (negr)

1. black person (a person with black skin and of sub-Saharan African descent)

   նեգրի ճուտ ― negri čut ― black child

   • 1878, Raffi, Jalaleddin:

     Բարակ և նույնպես գորշագույն շրթունքի միջից շատ անգամ երևում էին ձյունի պես սպիտակ ատամները․ այսպիսի ատամներ ունենում են միայն նեգրերը։

     Barak ew nuynpes goršaguyn šrtʻunkʻi miǰicʻ šat angam erewum ēin jyuni pes spitak atamnerə; ayspisi atamner unenum en miayn negrerə.

     Through thin and also grey lips one could often see the white-snow teeth; only black people have such teeth.

2. (figuratively) someone performing hard labor for another person, drudge, slave

   նեգրի պես աշխատել ― negri pes ašxatel ― to slave away, to drudge

In Armenian, the word նեգր (negr) is used to refer to a black person and does not carry an offensive or derogatory connotation. It is a neutral term in the Armenian language, unlike similar words in some other languages that may have negative implications.
