אוקראַיִנישע
Yiddish
Etymology 1
Adjective
אוקראַיִנישע • (ukrainishe)
- inflection of אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish):
- nominative feminine singular
- plural
Etymology 2
Ellipsis of אוקראַיִנישע ייִדישקע (ukrainishe yidishke) or אוקראַיִנישע ייִד f (ukrainishe yid), by analogy with אוקראַיִנישער (ukrainisher).
Noun
אוקראַיִנישע • (ukrainishe) f, plural אוקראַיִנישע (ukrainishe)
Usage notes
- Yiddish rigorously distinguishes between Jews and non-Jews in national terminology. A Ukrainian non-Jewish woman is not an ukrainishe, but rather an אוקראַיִנערין (ukrainerin) or אוקראַיִנערקע (ukrainerke).
- This noun declines in much the same way as the adjective אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish), but without the separate predicate form. For example, the dative singular is אוקראַיִנישער (ukrainisher).
