Yiddish

Etymology

From Middle High German hentsche, contraction of hantschuoch, from hant (whence האַנט (hant, hand)) + schuoch (whence שוך (shukh, shoe)). Compare the same in Luxembourgish Händsch, Middle Dutch hansche. See also uncontracted German Handschuh, modern Dutch handschoen.
