Etymology

From Middle High German hentsche, contraction of hantschuoch, from hant (whence האַנט (hant, “hand”)) + schuoch (whence שוך (shukh, “shoe”)). Compare the same in Luxembourgish Händsch, Middle Dutch hansche. See also uncontracted German Handschuh, modern Dutch handschoen.
