Etymology

Hitpa'el derivation from a new root extracted from אַשְׁכְּנַז (ashkenáz).

  1. (informal) To adopt Ashkenazi mannerisms, especially for the purpose of improving one's apparent socioeconomic status.
    • 1998, Aryé Dayán, Hama'ayán hamitgabér: sipurá shel tnu'át Shas, page 118:
      כאשר סיים את לימודיו במדרשייה, ב־1957, היה אפשר לומר ש״השתכנז לחלוטין״.
      When he finished his studies at the college, in 1957, it was possible to say that he "had ashkenazified completely".
