וועליש

Yiddish

Etymology

From Middle High German welisc (Romance, non-Germanic, foreign), from Old High German walask, walahisk, welisk, from Proto-Germanic *walhiskaz. The script was referred to as “Romance” or “foreign” because it was traditionally used by the Ladino-speaking Sephardim, rather than by the Ashkenazim.

Adjective

וועליש • (velish)

  1. of or related to the Vellish script, the most common typeface for printed Hebrew and the Sephardi Stam script from which the typeface is derived
