Etymology
Related to טֶרֶף (téref, “prey”), as the deadly injury usually occurred to a prey animal.

טְרֵפָה • (trefá) f (plural indefinite טְרֵיפוֹת)
- The carcass of an animal that died due to injury or illness, and therefore not kosher according to halakhic law.
- וְאַנְשֵׁי־קֹדֶשׁ תִּהְיוּן לִי וּבָשָׂר בַּשָּׂדֶה טְרֵפָה לֹא תֹאכֵלוּ לַכֶּלֶב תַּשְׁלִכוּן אֹתוֹ׃
- Neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs. (Exodus 22:30)
- (by extension) A food item that is not kosher.
