Used in the Bible (Ecclesiastes 9:15). Compare Aramaic (see for example the Targum of the word עני in Deut. 24:12). From Akkadian 𒈦𒆕𒂗 (muškēnum, “beggar, needy, indigent; class of people dependent or reliant on others, unable to provide supplies on their own; commoner”).
