First appearing in the Mishnah as a secondary form of צִיב (tsiv, fiber, fibrous material), which may have developed from a random phonetic change of [sˤ] to [s]. Cognate with Aramaic צִיבָא (tsivá, fiber).

    • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah. Uktzim, section 1.2:
      רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר, שֹׁרֶשׁ צְנוֹן גָּדוֹל מִצְטָרֵף, וְהַסִּיב שֶׁלּוֹ, אֵינוֹ מִצְטָרֵף.
      Rabbi Judah says: only the large roots of the radish are included, but its fibrous roots are not included.
    • a. 500 C.E., Babylonian Talmud. Pesachim, 115b.6:
      כְּרָכָן בְּסִיב וּבְלָעָן — אַף יְדֵי מַצָּה נָמֵי לֹא יָצָא.
      If one wrapped matza and bitter herbs in a palm net, the thin interlacing of vines that sprouts around a palm tree, and swallowed them, he has not fulfilled his obligation even of eating matza.
