Uncertain. One theory is that it derives from a root פ־ס־ג (p-s-g, “to cleave”). Another is that it was originally a proper noun (including in at least some of its occurrences in the Bible).

The Modern Hebrew noun senses are likely an extension of the proper noun via metonymy.
