Persian

Etymology

From Proto-Iranian *ā- + *saima- (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *skeh₂i-), perhaps borrowed from a prefixed form of Sogdian 𐼼𐼷𐼺 (sym /sēm/, confused, trouble) with final denasalization; cf. Classical Persian آسیمه (āsēma, confused).[1] Compare Ancient Greek σκαιός (skaiós, left-hand, clumsy, unlucky), Latin scaevus (left-hand, clumsy, unlucky), Proto-Germanic *skaibaz (slant, not straight).

First attested in Unsuri, early eleventh century.
