Etymology

Literally, We belong to God and to him we shall return. From Quran 2:156.

Phrase

إنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَإنَّا إلَيْهِ راجِعُون • (ʔinnā lillāhi waʔinnā ʔilayhi rājiʕūn)

  1. (Islam) Said in response to the news of someone’s death or as an expression of condolence; less often it may also be said for any other sort of negative occurrence.
