اِسْتِمْرَاء • (istimrāʔ) ?

1. verbal noun of اِسْتَمْرَأَ (istamraʔa, “to reckon ingestible”) (form X)
2. (archaic) digestion, or smooth process in the oesophagus
   • a. 1248, ابن البيطار [Ibn al-Bayṭār], الجامع لمفردات الأدوية والأغذية [De simplicibus medicinis opus magnum], where some editions have the taṣḥīf صمغ الدامينا:

     صمغ الداميثا: المنهاج: هو صمغ شجرة ببلاد فارس وأجوده ما كان صافياً يضرب إلى الحمرة وهو قوي الحدة والحرافة ملطف ينفع من الرياح الغليظة التي تعرض في المعدة والأمعاء ويلطف البلغم الذي يكون في المعدة ويحلله ويعين على الاستمراء وهو شبيه بالحلتيت في قوته إلا أن رائحته ليست بكريهة.

     Gum of damīṯā: This is the gum of a tree in Persia. The best is the one transparent with a tinge towards red. This gum is of a strong sharpness, hotness, and dilutive. It is gut against flatulences in the stomach and intestines and rarefies the pituita in the stomach, relaxes it and assists digestion. It is similar to asafoetida in its power save that its smell is not repelling.
