Etymology

Inherited from Middle Persian ʾpzwtn' (abzūdan), from Proto-Iranian *Habiǰáwti (to increase). The prefix is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Habʰí (to, against, for), while the root is of unclear origin, and possibly related to Lithuanian gáuti (to obtain).[1][2]
