Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀅𑀧𑀳𑀁𑀚 (*apahaṃja), from Sanskrit *अपभञ्ज (*apabhañja), from the prefix अप- (apa-) plus a word derived from the root भञ्ज् (bhañj, to break). The Sanskrit root भञ्ज् (bhañj) is derived ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeg-.
