Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *elti (co-sister-in-law), a word which, according to Nishanyan, derives from *ẹlt- (to take or carry away), the same root of ایلتمك (iletmek, to take or carry away). Cognate with Azerbaijani elti and Turkmen elti.
