North Levantine Arabic

Etymology

From Arabic آبَاط (ʔābāṭ, armpits, plural) via an intermediate contraction *أَبَاط (*ʔabāṭ) (compare North Levantine Arabic أجار (ʔajār, reward given as thanks)).

The full expression تحت باط (taḥt bāṭ) may be the reason for the disappearance of the أ (ʔa-) from *أَبَاط (*ʔabāṭ). The collocation *تحت أباط (*taḥt ʔabāṭ) could have made it easier for the glottal stop to be elided and for the resulting *تحتباط (*taḥtabāṭ) to lose its medial /a/ by syncope, producing modern تحت باط (taḥt bāṭ) and in turn باط (bāṭ).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /baːtˤ/ [bɑːtˤ]

Noun

باط • (bāṭm

  1. (anatomy) armpit(s), underarm
