Ultimately from the Nanking court dialect Mandarin 北京 (Běijīng), from before the modern palatalization of /k/ to /tɕ/.[1] Compare English Peking, French Pékin, Persian پکن (pekan), Portuguese Pequim and Russian Пеки́н (Pekín).
