تنبسه
Persian
Etymology
From the verb تَنبَسیدَن (tanbasidan, “to twist threads”), from Proto-Indo-European *temp- (“to span, stretch, extend”) whence also Persian تافتن (tâftan, “to twist; to twine”), تابیدن (tâbidan, “to twist, turn, spin”).
Compare Arabic طِنْفَسَة (ṭinfasa), borrowed from Persian or Middle Iranian, and Ancient Greek τᾰ́πης (tắpēs) (which may be a borrowing from Old Iranian), whence Latin tapēte (see there for further descendants).
