حباحب

Name of a proverbial Bedouin in pre-Islamic times أَبُو حُبَاحِب (ʔabū ḥubāḥib) who due to his avarice (بُخْل (buḵl)) would extinguish his parsimonious fire when somebody saw it. Then أَبُو الْحُبَاحِب (ʔabū l-ḥubāḥib), نَار أَبِي حُبَاحِب (nār ʔabī ḥubāḥib) and نَار الْحُبَاحِب (nār al-ḥubāḥib) supposedly designated any elusive fire, such as sparks produced by galloping horses with their hooves (Qurʔān 100:2). Surely that kunya was formed secondarily by folk imagination and “spark” is an original formation from the root’s meanings of ephemeral hunches of nature.

     حباحب: هو حيوان له جناحان كالذباب يضيء بالليل كأنه نار يقال إنه إذا سحق بدهن ورد وقطر في الأذن جفف القيح السائل منها. مسيّح بن الحكم: هو الدود الذي يضيء بالليل فيجفف في الشمس في إناء من نحاس ثم يرمى برأسها ويسقي منها صاحب الحصاة دودة واحدة باثني عشر مثقالاً من نقيع الحلتيت ثلاثة أيام فإنه ينتفع به. مجهول هي في نحو الذراريح إلا أنها أقوى منها جداً وأحد جداً.
