Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwnydʾk' /huniyāg/, “joyful”), from Proto-Iranian *xwan-iyā-ka-, from the same root as خواندن (xândan, “to sing”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swenh₂- (“to sound”).
