• سَفًى (safan)

The base verb of senses “to make smooth”, “to purge” is retained but in Hebrew and Aramaic, whence إِشْفَى (ʔišfā, “awl”) was borrowed; the verbs in Arabic within the present root such as سَفَا (safā, “to disperse, to blow away; to blow, to pour down”), سَفَى (safā, “id.”), أَسْفَى (ʔasfā, “id.”), سَفِيَ (safiya, “to become light or thin or gone fast”) are only secondary to the “dust” noun or “lightness” connotations.
