From Byzantine Greek Σαμοθρᾴκη (Samothrāíkē), from Ancient Greek Σᾰ́μος (Sắmos, “Samos”) + Θρᾴκη (Thrāíkē, “Thrace”), from the island's early Greek colonizers and the general ancient territory in which it lay.
