شرموطة
Arabic
Alternative forms
- شَرْطُوطَة (šarṭūṭa)
Etymology
From شَرْمَطَ (šarmaṭa, “to shred”). Most Semitists agree that it is of non-Semitic origin; perhaps from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (clm /čarm/, “a piece of skin, hide, or leather”) (see Persian چرم (čarm)), perhaps conflated with Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (šlm /šarm/, “shame”). Compare Hebrew סְמַרְטוּט (s'martút, “rag”), Aramaic מַרְטוּטָא (marṭūṭā), סְמַרְטוּטָא (səmarṭūṭā, “coarse garment”).
