Arabic

Etymology

Borrowed from Aramaic attested as Classical Syriac ܣܝܺܚܳܐ (sīḥā) and ܫܝܺܚܳܐ (šīḥā, Artemisia judaica), as well as in Hebrew שִׂיחַ (síaḵ, Artemisia judaica; shoot, shrub) and in Akkadian 𒋛𒄿𒈝 (sīḫum, wormwood). Perhaps related to the root ش ي ع (š y ʕ), meaning “to spread”, “to sprout out”, “to come forth”; compare شَيْعَة (šayʕa, bush, short tree).
