Etymology

From ظ ه ر (ẓ h r) meaning to be in the center between two points, surrounded on each side.^[1]

The name of two cities in Saudi Arabia, one wedged between the important port cities of Dammam and al-Khobar; the other was a historically important site in a mountain-pass between Yemen.
