    • c. 1260s, Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī, translated by Reynold A. Nicholson, مثنوی معنوی [Masnavi-ye-Ma'navi], volume II, verse 1392:
      دیده این شاهان ز عامه خوف جان
      کاین گره کورند و شاهان بینشان
      dīda īn šāhān zi 'āmma xawf-i jān
      k-īn guruh kūr-and u šāhān bē-nišān
      These (spiritual) kings have seen (themselves in) danger of their lives from the vulgar;
      for this multitude are blind, and the kings (are) without (a visible) mark.
