Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ʕaːjiz/

Participle

عايز • (ʕāyiz) (feminine عايزة (ʕayza), common plural عايزين (ʕayzīn))

  1. (transitive or auxiliary) to want (see usage notes)

Usage notes

This is used instead of its base verb عاز (ʕāz) in the indicative, its often paired with كان (kān, to be) outside of the present-tense:

  • انا عايز آكلana ʕāyiz ākulI [m.] want to eat
  • انا عايزة آكلana ʕayza ākulI [f.] want to eat
  • عشان كنت عايز انامʕašān kunt ʕāyiz anāmBecause I wanted to sleep

It accepts subject dropping, which may cause some ambiguity:

  • عايز آكلʕāyiz ākulI [m.] want to eat or He wants to eat
